Year in Review

Dr. Mark Keroack President & CEO of Baystate Healht & Anne Paradis, Board Chair, Baystate Health Board of Trustees

Welcome to the 2017 Baystate Health Annual Report. This report is a reflection of every Baystate Health team member's commitment to our mission to improve the health of the people in our communities every day, with quality and compassion.

With four hospitals, home health and outpatient centers and practices throughout the region, we strive to deliver care of the highest level across the health system while treating each person with dignity and respect. In 2017, significant work has been accomplished in both the Hospitalist Programs and the Emergency Departments, improving coverage, efficiency, and care coordination in all of our hospitals.

Educating health care providers who will stay local is a focus for Baystate Health. In 2017, we launched UMass Medical School – Baystate – Springfield's first medical school. Our first class of 21 students is enrolled in a unique community health curriculum focused on primary care.

Additionally, 2017 brought significant facility enhancements with the groundbreaking for a new Baystate Wing Hospital Emergency Department scheduled to open fall 2018. The new Combined Heat and Power Plant at Baystate Medical Center, expected to be operational early 2018, will reduce Baystate Medical Center’s carbon footprint and decrease utility costs. These are just a few of the highlights of the year. You can review the whole report to learn more.

We stayed true to our course and remained focused on safe, quality, accessible care for the people of our community. In doing so, we earned national recognition for health care quality and innovation. Baystate Health was awarded the prestigious Premier Alliance Excellence Award in Washington DC in June, recognizing years of top performance in quality and safety, innovation in health care delivery, and mentorship to peer organizations.

Baystate Medical Center was recognized by Watson Health (formerly Truven) as a 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospital, the eighth time the Heart and Vascular team has been awarded this coveted honor. In addition, Baystate Medical Center ranked the third-best hospital in Massachusetts according to the latest U.S. News & World Report ‘Best Hospitals’ rankings and has the coveted Magnet® recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a distinction that places the hospital’s nursing staff among the finest in the nation.

All of our community hospitals deliver outstanding care with Baystate Franklin Medical Center and Baystate Noble Hospital receiving a grade “A” for patient safety by the Leapfrog Group, and Baystate Franklin Medical Center being named a Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital by iVantage. Visit our awards section and highlights section to learn more about these and other national recognitions in 2017.

Thank you for your interest in and support of Baystate Health. Our providers, leaders, and all team members look forward to continuing to deliver a higher state of caring to our patients and their loved ones.

With gratitude,
